Most visitors flying into San Francisco for Napa Valley have the same first question once their feet hit the ground: what's the best way to actually get there? SFO is roughly 60 miles south of downtown Napa — close on a map, but the trip can vary from an hour to nearly three depending on traffic, day of the week, and whether you start at SFO or detour through the city.
This guide covers the practical decisions: how long it really takes, what the options cost, and what to choose for groups of two, four, or twelve.
How long is the drive from SFO to Napa?
In normal traffic, the drive is about 75 minutes door-to-door if you head straight north on US-101 across the Golden Gate, then over to Highway 37 and into the southern entrance of Napa Valley.
In commute traffic — weekday mornings northbound, weekday afternoons southbound, and Sunday afternoons leaving wine country — the same trip can stretch to two hours or more. Friday afternoons heading north are reliably the worst.
Plan accordingly: if your tasting reservation is at 11:00 a.m. and you land at SFO at 9:00 a.m., a chauffeured pickup gives you the buffer you need without becoming a fire drill at baggage claim.
Sedan, SUV, or Sprinter?
The right vehicle depends on three things: party size, luggage, and how social the day is going to be.
- Sedan — Best for one or two passengers with light luggage. Quiet, comfortable, and the most cost-efficient option.
- Executive SUV — Three to five passengers, or two with a lot of luggage. The sweet spot for couples bringing wine home or small groups going straight from airport to first winery.
- Sprinter executive van — Six to fourteen passengers. Worth it for any group of six or more, and the only sensible choice for bachelor/bachelorette weekends, multi-couple trips, and corporate offsites.

Tips for planning the day
A few things experienced visitors learn the hard way:
- Book tasting appointments in advance. Most quality wineries are appointment-only, especially on weekends.
- Limit yourself to three or four wineries. It's tempting to schedule five, but you'll enjoy three or four more.
- Build in lunch. A sit-down lunch at a winery or one of the great valley restaurants is the best way to pace the day.
- Plan a flexible end time. Traffic on US-101 southbound after about 4 p.m. on weekends is unforgiving.
